Chad and Natalie Corley at Corley Family Dental in Decatur, IL, can help you achieve the straight smile you’ve been dreaming of!

You can benefit from orthodontics if you have tooth or jaw alignment problems. If left untreated, poor tooth or jaw alignment problems can lead to temporomandibular joint pain, excessive tooth wear, broken teeth, and difficulty keeping your teeth clean. Braces can correct these tooth alignment and jaw problems:

  • Underbite or overbite
  • Crossbite or open bite
  • Gapped or overlapped teeth
  • Poorly erupted or rotated teeth

If you have any of the issues listed above, braces are definitely right for you!

So, why should you choose braces? It turns out there are many ways you and your smile will benefit from braces. Consider these important benefits:

  • A cosmetically beautiful smile because straight teeth are visually appealing
  • Great oral health because straight teeth are easier to brush and floss
  • More efficient chewing, which improves digestion and overall health
  • Less stress and wear on your teeth and your jaws from chewing

At Corley Family Dental, your dentists can help you choose from different types of orthodontics, including:

  • Conventional braces, using metal brackets and wires
  • Ceramic braces, using ceramic brackets and tooth-colored wires
  • Lingual braces, with brackets and wires cemented on to the tongue side of your teeth

Modern orthodontics with braces can improve your smile, which will improve your life. If you want to look great and have improved chewing ability, braces are definitely right for you. To find out more about braces, call Drs. Chad and Natalie Corley at Corley Family Dental in Decatur, IL, today!

Find out if there is truly a good age to get orthodontics in Decatur.

While we often see children sporting braces, this isn’t exactly a rite of passage that only children take. In fact, more and more teens Bracesand adults are opting to get straighter smiles, so it’s never too late to get braces. However, learn more about when you or your child should consider seeking orthodontic treatment.

When is the best age to get braces?

While patients can benefit from orthodontics in Decatur no matter what their age, the best time to get braces is usually between the ages of 10 to 14 years old. This is because the mouth is still changing and developing so it’s easier to straighten teeth. However, braces aren’t just for kids. In fact, about 20 percent of braces wearers are actually adults. Furthermore, there are more aesthetically pleasing orthodontics options like Invisalign that allow adults to straighten their smiles without sporting that infamous metal mouth.

What kind of braces work best for me?

There are a variety of different orthodontic options in Decatur and which one will work best for you will depend on several factors including your goals for treatment and what you are looking to correct. Bracket-style braces can be made from metal, ceramic or plastic. The plastic or ceramic braces can be a bit more expensive but are tooth-colored so they look more discreet than regular metal brackets.

Lingual braces are made from metal and are attached to the back of the teeth so they are easier to hide. However, those looking to get nearly invisible braces should opt for Invisalign, which is a series of clear plastic aligners that can correct misaligned and crooked teeth.

Should I get braces?

If you are dealing with any of these issues than you may be an ideal candidate for orthodontics: malocclusions, misaligned jaws, overcrowding, gaps between teeth and crooked teeth. Let your Decatur orthodontist help you decide which type of braces can improve the appearance of your smile.

If you are interested in getting braces, the first step is to schedule an orthodontic consultation with your Decatur orthodontist at Corley Family Dental. Let us get you that perfectly straight smile!

Family DentistryDoes your child suck their thumb? Perhaps they aren't losing their teeth as soon as the rest of their classmates. Maybe you've noticed a speech impediment forming as their permanent teeth come in. Though it may seem too soon to consider corrective dentistry, the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that parents take their children to a dental professional for an orthodontic checkup by age 7. Here are some reasons why your Decatur orthodontist wants to evaluate your child's teeth as soon as possible:

Still growing

A child's bones and facial structure are still taking shape, meaning that alignment problems in the jaw and teeth are easier to correct. As people age, their bones become more rigid, which makes their bite more difficult to adjust through traditional methods. This makes children and teenagers between the ages of 7 and 14 the best candidates for the first phase of orthodontia, which involves rerouting the growth pattern of the emerging adult teeth. Even though at this point, adult teeth are still coming in, the crowding and irregular formation that necessitates treatment can be anticipated by a trained professional.

Intervention means prevention

Identifying and fixing orthodontic issues early in life will likely mean fewer problems in the future. Poor habits can be modified, appearance can be improved, and more invasive dental procedures can be avoided later in life.

Saving money

As mentioned before, the processes for realigning teeth for adults is much more complicated and extensive than that of younger people. When the teeth are fixed into place and the skull has finished growing, the dental appliances used for children will have little or no effect. More invasive and long-term - and therefore more expensive - procedures are typically used for adults with alignment problems.

In a perfect world, your braces would stay intact throughout the time you wear them, never having a bracket break or a wire become uncomfortably loose. However, accidents do happen and parts of your braces can unexpectedly break, often in times Braceswhen our Decatur orthodontics office may not be open.

If possible, always call our office if the following occur:

  •  broken bracket
  •  broken wire
  •  loose band
  •  loose bracket
  •  wires poking out/sticking your gums

We can either direct you to come to our office right away or offer suggestions as to a fix.

However, if you experience an after-hours change to your braces, there are some steps you can take to minimize the “ouch” factor and keep your braces as intact as possible. If you have a broken bracket, the first step is to move the bracket back into position if it is still attached. Try using a cotton swab to gently move the bracket back into position - don’t use anything sharp in case it could damage your gums.

When you first got your braces, we provided you with some orthodontic wax - now is the ideal time to use it. Apply some wax underneath the bracket to temporarily attach the bracket in place until you can get to our office. If your bracket is completely loose, however, use a cotton swab to remove it and store it in a safe place to bring in to our Decatur orthodontics office. We will re-attach it when you come in.

If you have a loose band or a band that has fallen off entirely, do not attempt to re-attach the band. Bring it with you to our office, and we will re-attach it.

Protruding or too-long wires can be painful, not to mention annoying. Resist the urge to cut the wire yourself or have someone else do it for you. Instead, bend the wire away from your gum tissue if possible. You can also cover it with dental wax to protect your gums. If you do have a sore on your mouth, rinsing with warm (not hot) salt water can minimize pain and reduce your infection risk.

We are happy to assist you with any other braces questions -- please call our Decatur orthodontics office at (217) 330-6217.

While it would be wonderful to have perfectly straight teeth unfortunately, most people just aren’t that lucky. From overcrowding to dental gaps to crooked teeth, there are several reasons you may not have that ideal smile. However, orthodontics has been successfully improving smiles of all ages. If you’ve been contemplating how braces could help you, here is what to expect if you decide to get orthodontics in Decatur:

The Consultation

When you come in for your initial consultation, your Decatur orthodontist will examine your teeth and also perform X-rays so we can figure out what dental problems we are working to fix with braces. Depending on what you’re looking to have corrected, we may recommend traditional braces, clear braces or Invisalign. If you have any questions about wearing braces, now is the perfect time to get your questions answered.
For those getting Invisalign, we will also take impressions of your smile to send to a lab for fabrication.

Getting Your Braces

The process of getting your braces will be different depending on the type of orthodontic treatment you are getting. For those with traditional braces, we will glue each bracket onto your teeth. This process might seem a bit long, but it won’t hurt.
For those getting Invisalign, we will have you put on the first set of clear aligners in your treatment series to see that everything fits properly and feels comfortable.

The Treatment Process

Again, the treatment process will be different depending on the type of braces you opt for; however, patients typically come back every eight to ten weeks for adjustments. This means adjusting and changing out the dental wires, as well as the bracket bands. Adjustments can make mouths a bit sore. If you experience any discomfort, opt for a softer diet filled with applesauce and soups the day of your appointment.
You will also need to keep up with your beautiful smile and not let hygiene fall by the wayside. Even though you are wearing braces, you still need to make sure that your smile remains clean. A Water Pik can be great for removing food and other debris from hard-to-reach spots. Those with Invisalign will not have any dietary or oral care restrictions since these aligners can be removed.
